Types of HR certifications

HR certifications come in two broad forms, and understanding the difference helps you choose the right investment for where you are in your career.

Typically, an HR certification is a formal credential awarded by a professional body like SHRM or HRCI after passing a rigorous exam. These certifications validate your existing HR knowledge and are widely recognized by employers, particularly in compliance-focused or generalist HR roles. HRCI offers credentials ranging from entry-level (aPHR) to senior (SPHR), while SHRM’s competency-based certifications (SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP) focus on situational judgment and practical application. For Canadian HR professionals, HRPA and CPHR serve a similar credentialing function.

An HR certificate program takes a different approach. Rather than validating what you already know, it focuses on building new, practical skills in a specific HR domain.
